Constable Craig Bird & Sgt Braden Lonsberry
Community Leaders First, Heroes Always: Two Estevan Officers Honoured with Blue Spirit Award
For years, Constable Craig Bird and Sgt Braden Lonsberry have been known in Estevan as familiar faces always stepping up for their community. On January 26, 2026, the Saskatchewan Federation of Police Officers (SFPO) recognized their "service beyond the badge" with the Blue Spirit of Saskatchewan Award and a $1,000 donation to the Estevan Royal Canadian Legion.
Before a shared experience linked their paths, both men were deeply involved in local life:
- Constable Craig Bird, a veteran of the police and Canadian Armed Forces, commands the local Army Cadet Corps and founded the Southeast Military Museum.
- Sgt Braden Lonsberry, an 18-year veteran, coached youth hockey for 30 years and founded a police academy to introduce young athletes to the profession.
They both have served in Estevan for years. Constable Bird founded the Southeast Military Museum while Sgt Lonsberry has spent 30 years coaching youth hockey. While many of us know them for their bravery during a critical incident in November 2023, this award recognizes the decades of compassion and professionalism they’ve poured into Estevan long before that day.
As SFPO Vice President-South Taylor Elder put it: "Craig and Brayden’s commitment to Estevan doesn't end when they take off the uniform. They embody the compassion and leadership that the Blue Spirit Award was created to celebrate.”
