Saskatchewan Federation of Police Officers 81 Naloxone is an opioid overdose-reversal drug. It can rapidly restore normal respiration to a person who has stopped breathing as a result of an overdose from heroin or prescription opioids. Naloxone is used by (1) Emergency Medical Personnel (2) First Responders (3) a number of communities have established overdose education and naloxone distribution programs to make it accessible to friends and loved ones, or potential bystander along with a brief training in how to use these emergency kits. Two current formulations 1) Handheld auto injector 2) User friendly Intranasal formulation (developed in 2014) (developed in 2015) Higher than typical naloxone doses are needed to reverse fentanyl overdose. Many doses may need to be administered to revive someone experiencing a fentanyl overdose.
